What is the Best Fire Blanket in Canada?

There are several different materials used to make fire blankets. The choice of which fire blanket to buy depends on where the blanket is to be used, the type of fire, and the temperature of the fire.

Most fire blankets can be used for many types of small fires, including:

  • Kitchens (oil, grease)

  • Clothing

  • Clothes dryers

  • Electrical

  • Woodworking shops/garages

  • Outdoor (barbeques, camping, boats)

  • Vehicle passenger compartments

There are other fire blankets that are more suited for industrial applications.

1. Fiberglass Fire Blankets

Fibreglass blankets are made from woven fiberglass, which is a naturally fire-resistant material. They can be used on flames up to 260°C/500°F, and can withstand heat of 560°C/1050°F. They are also soft, lightweight, and easy to store.

Fibreglass blankets are the most common type of blanket. They are generally regarded as the most effective fire blanket, especially when used for the types of fires listed above. That’s why the Canada Fire Blanket is made of 100% fiberglass.

2. Wool Fire Blankets

Wool is another effective fire blanket material as it is naturally flame resistant. Wool fire blankets are also soaked in a flame-retardant fluid for added fire protection, and the heat resistance is similar to that of fibreglass.

There are some drawbacks though. Wool blankets are heavier and bulkier than fibreglass blankets, and they emit carbon monoxide during combustion.

3. Cotton Fire Blankets

Cotton is not an effective choice for fire blankets. It is not a fire-resistant material and needs to be processed with chemicals to make it effective.

Cotton fire blankets can help extinguish very small fires, but are best used for skin protection from flames if you don’t have fibreglass or wool blankets.

4. Silicone Fire Blankets

Silicone blankets are actually made from fibreglass that is coated with silicone. They are large and heavy and most suited for welding applications to protect the floor from fire sparks.

Consequently, they are not well suited for the small fires listed above.
